The Need

147 million orphans worldwide..

Every minute 23 children become orphaned. That’s 32, 877 every day, or 12 million annually.

In 2012, 7.6 million children will die before they reach the age of five. Over two-thirds of these early child deaths are due to conditions that could be prevented or treated with access to simple, affordable interventions.

There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. But still, nearly 150 million children under five are malnourished, and malnutrition is the underlying cause of most childhood illness and death.

In the last two years, the cases of malnutrition are higher than they’ve been in the last century. Malnutrition affects an estimated two billion people and kills more than 3.5 million children under five years old each year.

In the developing world, 1 in 4 children have vitamin A deficiency and as many as 3 in 5 have anemia.

1 child dies every 15 seconds because they lack access to clean water.

A child dies every ten seconds from diseases preventable with proper hygiene.

300 million children worldwide have no shoes.
